Trying to take care of my little piece of the planet

Read Between the Lines

I learned in this post on Political Wire, that the Governor of California may have a quirky sense of humor. And a bit of a temper.

As reported in the LA Times earlier in the week:
It reads like an innocuous letter from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, explaining why he vetoed a wonky piece of legislation that would [...]

Just Another Day in Paradise

This is Fall Break week at the university, which means that my work schedule is more flexible than usual. So, since today was supposed to include nice weather, I planned on taking the day off to work outside. And gorgeous it was: sunny and chilly this morning gave way to mid seventies by sunset. Perfect [...]

Baby Chick Update

Clearly not a textbook effort at poultry management, but we have chicks from both the Jersey Giant hens (black) and the Delawares (white).

And thanks to the efforts of our incubator technician below, we achieved at least a 50% success rate on the first batch. The second should be due in a week…..

Framing Carpenter for Hire

I’m truly speechless after watching this, courtesy of Steve (after seeing the juggler photo on my state fair post).

Our State Fair is a Great State Fair!

Well, maybe not this great…..but we had fun.

We spent Saturday……watching the crowds. Perhaps in this case sharing tips on how to best manage the melting ice cream.

Then a week later I added another 8-9 from the following weekend collection. So…..I don’t really expect the chicks to pop out [...]

They’re Almost Here!

I started two batches of eggs in the old incubator three weeks ago. This morning we see (and hear) the first signs of new chicks on the way….

I Got Your News Right Here

As a news junkie, it’s tough for me to avoid keeping up with the news. But without consciously doing so, I have pretty much avoided network television news for quite some time now (except for election returns). No surprise that Jon Stewart of the Daily Show explains why better than I could myself. In this [...]

I Got My Country Back!

Nothing says that America’s place in the world has changed since November more than this.

Flu Fighting Fist Bumps?

I just love it when stuff works out, especially for no logical reason. Take the fist bump for example. Six months ago I was vaguely aware that it existed, having watched a few ball games on TV. Whatever. But when the First Couple greeted each other with it on the night of his nomination, it [...]
