Trying to take care of my little piece of the planet

At the Mercy of the IT Guys

It appears that my site is back up; after three days of trying to correct the problem. The error was a ’simple’ one, seemingly caused by an electronic burp while trying to upgrade Wordpress to a more recent version. However, apparently, threatened by my attempt to modernize it, the Wordpress program did what any good [...]

Self Sufficiency – More Baby Steps

First, a photo from our recent trip to Asheville. Fortunately, other than one brief stranding of our van in an icy parking place, it really didn’t affect us too much. And yes, we had a great time. Perhaps I’ll manage a Biltmore House post later.

As for the title of this post; well, I’ve always been [...]

Down for Routine Maintenance

Away from the blogosphere for a few days for all the right reasons.
We’re in beautiful Asheville, NC for a few days, celebrating our thirtieth wedding anniversary.
Hope everyone has a great holiday.
May you have peace, health, love, and enough of whatever to be happy.

Who Gives a Hooter about Health Care?

Nance at Mature Landscaping didn’t help my disposition any with her efforts to flesh out (pun intended) my post regarding rewarding health care opponents with Hooters discounts. The idea that the chain would provide the serving staff with free tanning bed time but not with health care insurance pretty much says it all. The sordid [...]

Rousing the Rabble Against Health Care Reform

According to Talking Points Memo, one of the components in the anti-health care reform strategy is to financially reward people for voicing their opposition.
In some cases, the reward takes the form of a gift card to Hooters.
Some of this you just can’t make up.
Online ads have popped up lately, telling readers that [...]

My Place in the Food Chain

I think I’m slowly figuring out what little niche I should wiggle into here in the blogosphere. I think I’m a docent. An internet docent.
Yeah, traditionally, a docent is “a voluntary worker who acts as a guide in a museum, art gallery, etc.” You know. The typically elderly person who hands you the pamphlet, directs [...]

How Much Are You Worth?

I probably spend more time than is healthy wondering about how we value an individual’s worth. In my own view of ‘that’s just not fair!’, I know some people who are paid WAY more than seems appropriate, while others are vastly underpaid for their contributions. And as I get older, it seems that the disparity [...]

Another Rainy Weekend

Mid thirties and raining here. More time to post:

I did merge the two flocks, adding the ten-week old flock (seen here) to the nine others. Loaded the little guys into the big coop after dark, and then let them out together the next morning. As seamless as it gets.

AutoChicken

Steve, my friend and tech wizard extraordinaire, steered me to this site, where you can view/listen to this:

It Should be Snow

Over the last thirty years, I remember a number of early December snowfalls; pretty serious combinations of rain moving up from the Gulf and cold air sliding down from the Arctic during the first few days of this month. Then, for whatever reason, we’d have pretty quiet weather until the second half of January at [...]
